OET Ltd is an established Biotech company that provides a bespoke baculovirus expression service for its customers
and undertakes R&D projects to develop novel baculovirus expression system products. It also provides customers
with kits to use in their own laboratories.
OET has a vacancy for a fixed-term, 12 months appointment as Scientific Officer (SO) Band 1 or Band 2 to support
Contract Services and R&D Projects. The SO will join a dedicated and enthusiastic team of scientific staff working on
in-house and externally funded projects, and will assist senior staff in projects involving the development of vaccines
based on baculovirus expression vectors, including expression and purification of a range of proteins produced in
insect cells. The SO will be trained in, and gain experience of, a range of techniques including molecular biology, PCR,
virology, cell culture, analysis of recombinant proteins by SDS PAGE, Western Blot and other immunological assays,
and protein purification. All SOs also contribute to the general running of the labs.
We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Biomedical/Biological Sciences graduate (BSc or MSc) who can
demonstrate good attention to detail and ability to work accurately to a high standard within a small team. A good
knowledge of molecular and cellular biology is expected and we prefer applications to have some experience of
working in a laboratory environment (e.g. BSc/MSc project work or through work experience). However, full training
will be provided in all necessary laboratory techniques; willingness to learn and work well within a small team is
important. Those with experience of cell culture/aseptic technique are particularly encouraged to apply. The post is
available from January 2022. The salary offered is from £22,954 p.a. (Band 1) and from £25,835 p.a. (Band 2)
depending on qualifications and prior experience. The post is for 12 months initially with the possibility of extension.
● To assist with R&D/contract service projects under the direction of a senior scientist by undertaking a range
of laboratory techniques in molecular biology, virology, cell culture and purification and analysis of proteins.
● To assist with the culture of insect cells including scale-up for protein and virus production.
● To assist with general lab technical support.
● To keep detailed, high quality lab e-records and notebooks.
● To attend project meetings and help prepare and give presentations as required.
● To follow all Health & Safety procedures including those related to COVID-19.
● To undertake other duties that may be requested by the line manager from time to time, and which are
consistent with the type of duties outlined above.
